What to Wear for Engagement Photos

engagement session outfit ideas Nashville photographer

Outfit questions are one of the most common things I hear from couples before their engagement session. Specifically, what to wear for engagement photos — and I get it. You want to look good, you want to coordinate, and you have no idea where to start. The good news is it’s simpler than you think. Here’s what I actually tell my couples.

Start With How You Want to Feel

Before you even open Pinterest, think about comfort. If you’re stiff or self-conscious in what you’re wearing, it tends to show up in photos (and not in a way that’s your fault, it’s just how it works). The couples who look the most relaxed and natural are almost always the ones who showed up in something they feel genuinely good in.

That doesn’t mean show up in sweats. It just means wear something you actually love. There’s a real difference between “this looks good on me” and “I feel like myself in this,” and the second one is what you’re going for (but obviously having both is ideal).

Complementary, Not Matching

Please don’t match! Identical outfits tend to read as costume-y and flatten the photo rather than add to it. (They also feel very 2003 family photo-ish if you know what I mean.) What works so much better is complementary: a shared color story without being identical. Think one person in a warm rust top and the other in cream, or soft green and tan. They belong together without looking like a uniform.

A good gut check: lay both outfits side by side and see if they feel like they go together. If yes, you’re good.

Neutrals Are Your Best Friend

You really can’t go wrong with neutrals. Creams, tans, warm whites, soft greens, dusty blues — these tones photograph beautifully, don’t compete with your surroundings, and feel timeless in the best way. Bold colors can absolutely work but they do tend to pull focus away from your faces, which is usually not what you want. If you’re looking for color palette inspiration, Pinterest is a great place to start.

Patterns are totally fine too, just nothing so busy it becomes distracting. A subtle floral or thin stripe is great. A loud graphic print is going to fight with everything else in the frame.

Layers and Accessories Go a Long Way

A jacket, a flannel, a light cardigan. Layers add SO much dimension and personality to photos. They also give you something natural to do with your hands, which sounds small but actually makes a big difference. Same goes for accessories. A meaningful piece of jewelry, a hat, a scarf. These little details make photos feel more like you and less like a generic couples shoot.

Don’t overthink it, but don’t skip it either. The little things add up!

Flowy Is Always a Good Idea

For women especially, movement is your friend. Flowy skirts and dresses photograph so beautifully and give your photos that natural, effortless feeling. If you’re torn between two options and one of them moves, go with that one.

Consider Two Outfits

A lot of my couples do one more casual look and one dressier one, especially if we’re shooting in a few different spots. It gives your gallery more variety and honestly just makes the session more fun. Relaxed and casual for one set of photos, something a little more elevated for another. Two totally different vibes in one session and your gallery will feel so much richer for it.

The Most Important Thing

Wear something that feels like you. Not what you think engagement photos are supposed to look like, just you. When you feel good, it shows, and that’s really the whole thing. Figuring out what to wear for engagement photos doesn’t have to be stressful, I promise.

If you’re still not sure, send me a photo before your session and I’m always happy to weigh in. And if you haven’t figured out where you want to shoot yet, check out my Nashville engagement session location guide for some ideas.

My couples usually tell me the same thing: having me at their wedding felt easy. Like they could actually be present and soak everything in, knowing someone was paying attention without needing anything from them.

That's the whole point.

You're not hiring me to direct you through a shot list or make you perform for the camera. You're hiring me to document your day as it unfolds. The way your mom looked at you during your vows. The toast that made everyone lose it. The moment you two finally exhaled and realized you were married.

If you're planning something outdoorsy, intimate, or a little adventurous, if you value natural moments, and want a photographer who feels more like a friend than a stranger with a camera, then you're in the right place.

You get to laugh, cry, and actually experience what's happening on your wedding day. I make sure nothing slips by. Your photos feel real because the energy behind them was real. No forcing, no performing. Just you, living your day.
